1. Ideal wear

Both carbide and diamond wear evenly.

2. Premature exposure of diamond

The matrix wears earlier than the diamond wears. The diamond is exposed too early, reducing the life of the drill bit.

Causes:

(1) The drilling pressure is too high relative to the rotation speed;

(2) The water flow is too low;

(3) The matrix is too soft.

Countermeasures:

(1) Increase the rotation speed and reduce the drilling pressure;

(2) Increase the water volume;

(3) Replace the drill bit (harder matrix).

3. Burning drill

The matrix is completely melted and the water path is closed.

Causes:

(1) Water leakage;

(2) Poor water circulation.

Countermeasures:

(1) Increase the water volume;

(2) Check whether the mud pump is working properly;

(3) Check whether the drill pipe joint is leaking;

(4) Confirm whether the inner tube is too long and adjust it if necessary.

4. The diamond drill bit is polished

The drill bit does not advance and the diamond particles appear to be polished.

Causes:

(1) The drilling pressure is too low relative to the rotation speed;

(2) The water volume is too high;

(3) The matrix is too hard.

Countermeasures:

(1) Sharpen the drill bit;

(2) Reduce the rotation speed and increase the drilling pressure;

(3) Reduce the water volume;

(4) Replace the drill bit (softer matrix).

5. Inner diameter wear

Inner diameter or internal annular wear.

Causes:

(1) The drilling pressure is too high;

(2) The formation is very broken;

(3) The core remains in the hole;

(4) The matrix is too soft.

Countermeasures:

(1) Increase the rotation speed.

(2) Reduce the drilling pressure;

(3) Replace the drill bit (harder matrix);

(4) Increase the water volume;

(5) Check and adjust the inner tube length.

6. Outer diameter wear

Outer diameter or external annular wear.

Causes:

(1) Vibration;

(2) Too high a rotation speed;

(3) Too little water volume;

(4) Hole collapse, the borehole is expanded.

Countermeasures:

(1) Increase the water volume;

(2) Reduce the rotation speed;

(3) Check the outer diameter of the reamer;

(4) Add drilling fluid treatment agent to reduce vibration;

(5) Try a new drill bit structure (deep side water groove or deep water outlet).

7. Inside wear

The inside of the drill bit wears faster than the outside.

Causes:

(1) The drilling pressure is too high relative to the rotation speed;

(2) The core remains in the drilled hole;

(3) The formation is very broken;

(4) The core is blocked in the inner tube.

Countermeasures:

(1) Reduce the drilling pressure;

(2) Increase the rotation speed;

(3) Check and adjust the length of the inner tube;

(4) Add drilling fluid treatment agent to deal with broken formations;

(5) Do not try to pressurize the core through after it is blocked.

8. Wear on the outside

The outside of the drill bit wears faster than the inside.

Causes:

(1) Too little water;

(2) Drill rod leaks;

(3) The borehole is enlarged.

Solutions:

(1) Increase the water volume;

(2) Check if the drill rod leaks;

(3) Check the diameter of the reamer.
