A few months ago I wrote (briefly) about “a big [Formula One] project” I’m working on, that I was hoping to have ready in time for the start of the 2011 season.  I now know that this isn’t possible.

And then a couple of weeks ago I posted about a new CMS (content management system) that I’m building.  I estimated at least 18 months for this.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to re-work the NationStates toolkit.  I’m planning to re-write a lot of the algorithms used to calculate the statistics to iron out one or two anomalies that have been pointed out. (more…)

I’ve just finished watching a clips show of Would I Lie To You?, and on it came up the issues of calculating the day of the week for any given date, mentally and without Wolfram Alpha or a calendar.  Apparently it is possible- you don’t even need a calculator, (so long as you’re reasonably proficient with mental dividing) but you will have to learn “month codes” to make it work- one for each month. I’d like to start by saying that this won’t be a regular occurrence.  What I mean is that never again (at least not for this series) will I post about The Apprentice.  Not because I have nothing to say- I have plenty in fact- but because it’d be boring to a lot of people, and most importantly because I’d risk breaking my “suitable for all” policy for this website. The terms ‘country’ and ‘state’ are often used synonymously, but actually they don’t mean the same thing.  What’s interesting to learn is that the term ‘country’ actually has very little legal bearing- it simply refers to a geographical area.  What people usually mean when they use this word is in fact a ‘state’- an area which a government holds sovereignty over. Speed cameras are the single biggest deterrent to would-be speeders in this country.  If John knows that he can drive from his house to the shops, passed a dozen speed cameras, at whatever speed he wants and that none of them will flash, he’s probably going to go over the limit. (more…)
